Baldacci bid for 2nd District ‘could well start in the days ahead’

Democrat Emily Cain could have a primary challenger in Maine’s 2nd District soon: Joe Baldacci is seeking fundraising staff and an online jobs posting says his 2016 bid “could well start in the days ahead.”

It’s an expected move from Baldacci, a Bangor city councilor, lawyer and the brother of former Gov. John Baldacci. He has said that he’d make a final decision on a run by July, but the posting makes a run look more certain.

Baldacci confirmed the posting on Thursday, saying he’s “seeing what’s out there” for staff, saying he’s still just exploring a run. So far, Cain’s the only person to declare against U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin, who beat Cain in November and has become one of Democrats’ top targets for 2016.

But Baldacci faces challenges within the party, since Cain is getting institutional help from national Democrats. Earlier this month, she held a Washington D.C. fundraiser with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California and other party heavy-hitters, including U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party’s campaign arm.

The posting indicates that Baldacci has retained Fundraising Management Group, which says it has raised money for former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and other Democrats nationwide. It calls a job with the campaign “an excellent opportunity” for recent college or law school graduates and “others who are interested in pursuing a career in Democratic politics or looking for a once in a lifetime experience.”
