Farms and art make for a great combination

Guest post this week by Linda Smith: Belfast’s Farm and Art tour gave us a great excuse to go to one of our favorite towns on Columbus Day Weekend. In an effort to please me, George knew I would enjoy a tour of farms. It turned out that one farm and a number of artists would open their spaces on Saturday and different ones on Sunday. The great surprise was how much we […]

Day tripping through the fall in Maine

It’s the best time of the year in Maine with stunning scenery, cool temperatures, lots of things to do and places to see. Our favorite drive to enjoy the colorful foliage goes from Farmington to Rangeley, across to Oquossoc, and home through Mexico. Maine’s scenic byways offer lots of great views and you can check them all out here. If you have kids, you’ll want to visit Jen Hazzard’s website […]

For fall season, celebrate Maine crafters and microbrewers

Maine microbrews are a fascinating story, and you can celebrate them with me on the weekend of Oct. 3-4. It’s Maine Craft Weekend and the celebration is statewide. This is part of American Craft Week, a nationwide event. I did a bit of celebrating early, on Sept. 17, by enjoying four superb beers brewed by Farmington’s Tumbledown Brewing Company. Owner Matt Swan started brewing beer for himself and friends eight […]

Looking forward to Bangor’s Maine Harvest Festival

Two years ago, Linda and I discovered the Maine Harvest Festival in Bangor. It’s held in the fall and presents an astonishing array of booths featuring farms, food, fun, and fellowship. This year the festival is scheduled for Nov. 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The first year we attended we especially enjoyed a stage presentation by Kate Krukowski Gooding that was […]

Book illuminates visits of Maine’s 64 lighthouses

You’ll not find a prettier place in Maine than West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. It seemed very appropriate, reading this book on a bench dedicated to David Jones at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. David was a relative of mine who ferociously and lovingly kept the grounds at the Lighthouse and park, until his untimely sudden death from a heart attack at the age of 48. The book was “The Islandport Guide […]

Discovering new restaurants in Bar Harbor

Linda and I love discovering new restaurants and two of our discoveries, both in Bar Harbor, were especially good. On our annual trip to Mount Desert Island last year, we enjoyed a dinner at Lompoc Café, recommended to us by readers of our weekly Travelin’ Maine(rs) column in the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel. While the outdoor seating looked intriguing, all the tables were taken. Kids were playing bocci while […]

Lunch and beers in Bangor puts smiles on our faces

Lunching at Geaghan’s in Bangor two days in one week was a rare treat. On our way home from our camp in the north woods, we enjoyed early dinner, then two days later, on our way to a week’s stay in Lubec, we had lunch there. While Portland grabs the headlines for foodies nationwide, Bangor’s our kind of place, with savvy civic leaders, a great waterfront on the Penobscot River, […]

    Italy diary: The final entries

Days 9, 10, 11  OK, now we’re settling in here. We’re on our second round of visits to our favorite restaurants. We’re eating dinner as late as 9 p.m., just like real Italians. We’re taking our morning walks earlier, because temperatures are reaching into the middle and upper 90s. Our shaded deck, and the nearby pool, have become our sanctuary. For the record, on Day 9 we ate all our […]

Italy diary: Food trucks, baby boars and beautiful views

Day Six  On our first trip to market day in Greve Square, we were in an apartment above the square in the village of Greve and had slept late after an all-night flight. When I opened the drapes, I was astonished to see the square filled with vendors. It was market day! We’ve tried to make sure we are here on a Saturday, every time we come to Greve, because […]
